Wednesday Night Basketball

April 21, 2004

On Wednesday nights, I play basketball with some friends. I have one friend who organizes the whole thing and he only invites people that will be cool and sportsmanlike. The reason is, there are a lot of guys who have bad attitudes and get all pissy when they get fouled or aren't playing well. Whereas my friends and I just want to have fun and get some excercise.

It's sort of funny participating in some other athletic activity since running has taken such a hold on me. The reason is because when one runs for long periods of time, your body gets in a pattern of movement. In fact, one reason, at least for me, that I have to jog in place at a red light is because starting is extremely harder than continuing to jog in place. But because my body is so atuned to this constant, steady, calculated movement, when I play basketball, my body feels very "out of sync." In fact, I try to constantly monitor my body to ensure I'm not going to injure myself. That's all I need to do is injure myself after three months of training.

The good thing is that it's a sort of cross-training for me. Instead of the constant running, I have several sprints and of course all of the jumping and twisting is good for my back, leg, and stomache muscles.
